Occupational safety and health organization

Among various organization, I chose WHO to look up their program.  They have lots of programs, but I simply chose the occupational health.  I looked up the occupational and work-related diseases.  The WHO Global Plan of Action on Worker's Health improves the diagnosis, reports and registers occupational diseases and building capacities for estimating the occupational burden of disease (WHO).  Then, I looked up the graph for global estimated of occupational burden of disease.  In 2004, the airborne particulates was the highest risk to lead the death in low and middle income.  I also discovered that only 15% of employees in the word have access to specialized occupational health service to prevent occupational risks, health surveillance, training in safe working methods, first aid and advising employers in occupational health and safety. The Global Plan of Action works for full coverage of all workers, including small and medium-sized enterprises, agriculture, and migrant and contractual workers, with essential interventions and basic occupational health services.  Their interventions and service for workers' health would protect me when I work as a nurse in the future. I can have specialized health services for my job.  Also, they will promote the healthy workplaces, so I can have an safe working environment. This is really important for me who will work in the hospital where the safety environment.. For example, needlestick juries is also one of the program in WHO in order to reduce the infection caused from needle sticks.  I found the average 1-9 nddlestick injuries occurs every year in 20 countries.

  1. Hi Yeana,

Thank you for sharing this information about the WHO. It is amazing to me that only 15% of the workforce worldwide has access to specialized occupational health services. This makes me feel very lucky because as a nurse I have had access to wonderful occupational healthcare. I was also surprised to read that airborne particulates caused the most morbidity and mortality. I guess this figure could be heavily influenced by what the WHO includes as an airborne particulate related disease.

  2. Hello Yeana,

I am glad to see that there are efforts being put forth by WHO to protect both migrant workers, and those in the health field. In particular, I am happy that there appears to be more widespread effort to ensure the safety of migrant workers, possibly as a response to an increased public awareness. I believe such policies/efforts can be produced through increasing public awareness of certain health issues. This is a great example of that.
