1) What do you personally find most troubling about climate change?
After watching all the videos and looking the website, I found people's acknowledgment of seriousness of climate change is most troubling. I guess many people already know that our climate has been changed for many years. However, I don't think they are really understand and know how serious it is now. We feel like there are some time to solve this problems, but this is not true anymore. I want everyone to feel that we need to do something against climate change. As people in the video mentioned several times, this is time to act to do something for climate change. We are actually late according to the video, but still can make it better if we start to do something. Small changes can make big changes eventually, but it has to be everyone who do act. This can start from our home by saving the energy, using healthy products or foods.
2) As a public health professional, what do you think needs the greatest attention right now?
As a public health professional, I think we need the greatest attention is loss of sea ice in the Arctic due to global warming. I remember the documentary video about melting of the sea ice in Arctic. It was tragic and made me depressed. I saw lot of animals dying from warmer temperature and loosing the ice. That was already happened from long time ago, but we still don't see any improvement. We need to understand that the animals in the Arctic are dying because human are using the environment in wrong way. As soon as possible, we need to fix to protect our animals. One idea I suggest that we can promote the "zero energy home" like zero waste on the last lecture. When we build the house, we can make better ventilation system in order to keep the heat in the house without using too much heater. Also, we can use solar energy instead of gas or oil.
3) If you were visiting with a long-lost relative who had never heard about climate change, how would you describe it and its attendant human health and ecological threats?
The climate has been changed for many years. It impacts on environment negatively. Due to increased of temperature, which is called global warming, the water has been rising and the severity of storms and other nature disaster has been rising as well. Also, the climate changes causes the air-borne and water-born disease. For example, the Lyme disease happens more with longer summer season. Another example, we get sick from eating sea foods that has toxin due to climate changes. In many ways, the climate changes has been threaten us as I mentioned. In particular, children and older people are more vulnerable. The rate of Asthma or other lung/heart disease are associated to the climate changes. Because of warm temperature, the disease such as West Nile Virus or Dengue are happened more often. There are many ways we can resolve this issue. We should finish the foods we have in order to decrease the waste. Also, we can use public transportation whenever it is possible instead of driving our own car, which contributes to the air pollution. At home, we can reduce the temperature of heat by wearing more cloths or putting the rugs to keep the warmth. Some countries or cities have already have been preparing by building levees, which can protect the cities when water floods. However, it costs a lot of money, so many poor countries such as Bangladesh does not have the water defense system.
Hi Yeana,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people's lack of acknowledgement about this topic is disturbing. Unfortunately, people have known about the dangers of climate change for a while, but few are taking the necessary actions to slow the accumulation of carbon emissions. We may have surpassed the point of people making small, individual contributions as this is not making much progress. Instead, we need to come together as a global community and implement widespread mandates that will have a true impact on climate change. At this point, we will hopefully see change on a global scale.
Hello Yeana,
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting to see everyone's ideas on what they consider to find the most troubling about climate change, and what they believe could be effective means for helping to remedy this issue. You mentioned that you feel people do not know enough about climate change, and increasing people's knowledge on climate change would help. I agree with you, and of course there have and are many efforts to do this. However, those efforts to inform the public may be in jeopardy, as the current American administration is seemingly fighting against efforts to thwart climate change. Therefore, I believe that public education on climate change is even more imperative than it has been in the past.
